Virtual Reflections

by Steve  | December 30th, 2008

As we close out the year 2008 and get ready for 2009, the last year of the decade, I find myself reflecting on the past. For me, it was quite a great year. My latest book “VMware ESX Essentials in the Virtual Data Center” was released right before VMworld in Las Vegas and I came on board with Tripwire in an exciting new role.  I just turned 40 (ok maybe that part wasn’t so great) the day after Christmas and a little earlier, my wife had given me a very cool birthday surprise. In case you missed seeing the video you can check it out here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1cx1G_XjYU I highly recommend everyone giving this a go. It was a truly amazing experience.

So let’s review virtualization from the start of the century. x86 virtualization was born and the company behind it, VMware, had its rise to glory, which they then dominated and took ownership of the server virtualization market.  Microsoft is the next real contender but will not be ready to really compete until at least 2010, so the first decade of the 21st century, in terms of virtualization, is all VMware. There are others on the playing field as well since Citrix bought Zen and Red Hat has embraced paravirtualization. I am sure I have missed a lot more. Now all of the ones mentioned above are looking at the new frontier called the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure or VDI. Looking forward to the near future VDI may be expanded to include the mobile market. Pretty soon we might be all working in the clouds. An amazing vast of companies have been created or started to answer needs in the virtualization arena. This has opened up new opportunities for more and more people and more specifically for me.

During my skydiving adventure, as I was falling with extreme speed like a rock falling to the ground, I had a moment to reflect that virtualization technology seems to be moving just as fast as or faster than I was. One just needs to blink for something to change and I have seen a lot of good change and have alot of good friends to be thankful for.

Happy New Year!!!
